The Historical Laws of Hong Kong Online
http://asterix.lib.hku.hk/hlawhk/
is a full-text image database providing access to past
revised editions of Hong Kong laws. The database comprises
a total of six consolidations of the laws of Hong Kong:
1901, 1912, 1923, 1937, 1950, and 1964.
With the current Laws of Hong Kong available on the
web through BLIS (http://www.justice.gov.hk
/Home.htm) (Bilingual Laws Information System, maintained
by the Dept. of Justice), the Historical Laws of Hong
Kong Online database rightly fills the gap in legal
research on the historical development of the law of
Hong Kong. The first release of the online database
now allows searching for text in Chapter or Ordinance
Number, Chapter or Ordinance Title, and Edition. It
is expected that the second release will incorporate
full text keyword search of all Chapters or Ordinances.

Hong Kong Government Gazette http://asterix.lib.hku.hk/hkgro
is now added to HKUL's online database, Hong Kong Government
Reports Online (HKUGRO). Previously HKUGRO held three
titles only: HK Administrative Report, HK Sessional
Papers, and HK Hansard. The addition of the Gazette
to this online database will now allow historical researchers
immediate access to yet another valuable primary resource
on Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Government Gazette contains
proclamations, official notifications, appointments,
reports, texts of proposed Ordinances, proceedings of
the Legislative Council, legal advertisements, registration
lists (i.e. doctors, midwives, architects, etc.), jury
lists, land sales, and other data dealing with Government
business. It includes departmental annual reports from
1853 to 1878. There is an occasional Gazette Extraordinary
on special occasions.
The online database now contains full text imaging
and indexing of the Gazette for years 1900 - 1941. Data
for years 1853 - 1899 will be added in the coming months.

Video On The Web
This Video On The Web project (VOTW) will ultimately
send digitized streaming video to the desktop. During
the current early phase of the project, 10 PCs in the
Main Library have been equipped with clients enabling
receipt of this video. Three are located in the G/F
Reference area, one in Special Collections, and one
each on the first floor to sixth floors. PCs enabled
with this client are marked with a sign on top reading
Video on the Web Station. Approximately 100 videos,
mostly on subjects relating to Hong Kong's socioeconomic
conditions, have been digitized now, with more to be
added later. Because of copyright issues, these digital
videos can be viewed now only on PCs within the Main
Library.
We appreciate the generosity of Radio Television Hong
Kong, and the General Education Unit of the University
of Hong Kong in granting the Libraries permission to
use their videos in this project. RTHK is an acclaimed
producer of compelling programming on every walk of
life in Hong Kong. The HKU General Education Unit graciously
gave permission to use six programs from the Sun Yat
Sen Forum Series, of speeches given by six well-known
figures in Hong Kong.
