Wireless Networking
Access points have been set up in various places in the Main Library in support of the HKU campus Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Registered users of the Libraries may approach the Registration Counter of the Main Library Circulation Desk and ask to borrow a Wireless Network Interface Card (NIC) and its installation CD-ROM. After checking these items out, users may read the accompanying instructions to locate areas in the Main Library available for Wireless computing, and also instructions for installing the NIC in their laptops. These instructions are also found at http://www.hku.hk/cc/javamenu/ccwlan.htm. The NIC is for use within the Main Library and is due back on the same day before the Library closes.

HKU Libraries Proxy now in place
+ http://lib.hku.hk/proxy/

Ever thought of using HKUL subscribed e-journals, databases and e-resources when outside Hong Kong, travelling abroad, on sabbatical leave, when using HKUPPP or VPN is otherwise impossible, or when you simply prefer to use a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

Our new proxy server is now in place! This service is for current HKU students and faculty. The above URL describes the procedure that the user must follow to change the proxy settings in the Web browser on his or her PC. After this is done, and when the user clicks on the URL of a HKUL subscribed e-resource for the first time, a pop-up screen will ask for the user's username and password, the same ones that are used to access HKUL checkout information.

Please note that
if HKUPPP or VPN are used, there is no need to use the Library Proxy.
after use, you should change the proxy settings back to their original settings; otherwise non-HKUL URLs will produce error messages.
