(April 2013)

I usually stay in Level 3 of the Main Library which is a wonderful place for our students to study at. However, as the finals coming, the seats there cannot fulfill the requirements and every seat is very precious. I noticed that so many students that they just put their books or other things in the desk and then left for a long long time. Some students put their own belongings in more than one desk to occupy the vacancy for their friends. I think these behaviours are inappropriate and waste the library resources. I hope the library can put forward a solution to deal with it.

We have been closely monitoring seat hogging in the Main Library all these years. Our staff will patrol around the Main Library regularly and seats at the Study Zone of Level 3 and on 4/F are available for booking to meet the user needs. You may also inform staff at the Information Counter on Level 3 and they will act accordingly to avoid seat hogging. During the examination time, the Main Library will also open 21.5 hours.

Here, I would like to strongly recommend to turn down the air conditioners in study rooms, especially those on Level 3. I mean the temperature in the study space of Level 3 is so low that even after I wear one more overcoat in the room, I still feel very cold. I think many students may also have this feeling, as they all have to wear a very heavy coat when they enter the study space. This should be also a great waste of energy, which, I believe, is not coincident to the "energy-saving and emission-reduction" spirit of our city.

I just did a site visit to the Study Zone of Level 3 and found that the temperature there is two degrees below our default temperature setting (i.e. 24 degree celcius +/- 1 degree). As the colleague taking care of the temperature control is off duty right now, I can only ask for assistance to address the problem tomorrow morning. May I advise you to consider moving to another seat in the Main Library if you need to stay here this evening.

I really appreciate your quick reply and kind consideration. Your warmhearted suggestion is really nice and reasonable, many thanks.
